Esports are multiplayer video game competitions for professional players. Organised online and offline, competitions have long been a part of video game culture with esports now a significant factor in the video game industry. Many game developers actively design towards the professional esports subculture.
The legitimacy of esports as a sports competition remains in question; however, the International Olympic Committee has explored incorporating them into future Olympic events and there is no doubting their popularity and influence.
In 2018 alone, prize pools for the major competitions totalled over $138m, with thousands of professionals competing across hundreds of titles. By 2019, it is estimated that 427 million people worldwide will be watching some form of esports competition and the increasing availability of online streaming media platforms has become central to their growth… Watch this space.
Going for gold
The prestigious Esports Awards takes place annually, recognising the outstanding teams and individuals excelling in the industry today. This year Touch of Ginger was invited to become the Awards Partner by PTP to create a unique esports trophy that will be recognised by the industry and coveted by the winners.
We loved the challenge to create a trophy that encapsulated the aspirations and expressed the sheer energy of this young and dynamic industry; this called for some lateral thinking.
A new angle…
Taking the Esports Awards logo as inspiration, we decided to turn things on end. We proposed a dynamic obelisk form with the logo presented in a prominent vertical aspect. The obelisk features a dynamic wing shape formed of layered aluminium plates wrapped in a triangular plan form. Each plate is laser profiled and finished in black or gold using a hard anodised process that is both eye-catching and durable.
Esports exist in the online environment so it was vital the trophy design should work well on camera and video. Equally it was an important consideration that it should feel good in the hand. At 38cm tall and weighing in at a substantial 1.75kg, the curved edges of the cool aluminium trophy make it a very tactile object to handle.
And the winner is…
…everyone. The trophy was extremely well received and a great success with organisers and winners alike. Touch of Ginger is looking forward to a prosperous partnership within the esports arena.

• Over 3.3 million votes were cast along the way to deciding a home for the 24 trophies!
