The draw for the UEFA EURO 2020 final took place at ROMEXPO in Bucharest on 30 November 2019. The tournament was due to open in Rome on 12 June 2020 but was postponed due to Covid 19. Now planned for 2021, the top two teams in each group and the four best runners-up progress to the round of 16, then it is into straight knockout fixtures. Wembley Stadium is set to host the semi-finals and the final although sadly dates are still to be released for this event.

The draw

There is huge drama and expectation centred around the Euro final draw. The global televised event is watched by millions of fans, pundits and professionals as each draw ball is opened by the celebrity to announce the match fixtures written inside.

UEFA invited Touch of Ginger to develop a VIP gift for the Bucharest event. Working in collaboration with their merchandising team we designed a unique ‘replica’ draw Ball to be gifted to 550 special guests at the event.

Game of two halves

The design features a solid cast resin chrome plated ball which comes apart to reveal a message inside – the words “Kick-off!” engraved on one half and “195 Days to Go” engraved on the other.

The ball is the exact same size as an original Draw Ball but is held shut by rare earth magnets embedded in each half. The 3D raised panelling around the ball replicates the Euro 2020 match ball and was a particularly challenging aspect of the design for us to achieve using the latest parametric CAD software.

The ball is presented on a machined acrylic support tube and smartly packaged in a cube shaped box. With its solid chrome finish and slick magnetic closure, the gift is very stylish and highly tactile.
